Horse Gentian, Orange Fruited

Triosteum aurantiacum

This unusual plant has hidden innocuous red-ish brown flowers in the leaf axils. The fruits retain their five sepals and are hairy and green turning bright orange at maturity. While the opposite leaves are large, the fruits are only 10 to 15 mm in diameter and enclose three hard seeds. Found in rich soil in mixed hardwoods. A close relative is the T. perfoliatum which may have up to two fruits at each axil and leaves that enclose the main stem. Also known as Tinkers Weed and Wild Coffee
