Short - stalked Bolete

Suillus brevipes

The Boletes have tubes instead of gills on the underside of their cap. Suillus has fine round yellow tubes from which ochre spores drop. Flesh is white. Stalk is short and white with no ring and becoming more yellow at the top. Size 5 - 10 cm diameter. Found under pines. Typical of Boletes or Sponge Mushrooms is the quick invasion of insects that lay eggs producing larvae that consume the mushroom. Suillus luteus the Slimy Jack is a similar mushroom but tends to be slimy with angular pores and it has a prominent ring on the stem.
