Buffalo Berry

Shepherdia canadensis

Usually a low, spreading shrub with leathery green leaves that on the back are silvery with brown spots. Fruit can be whipped in water to produce a bitter soaplike froth that is sometimes sweetened with sugar and eaten. Whole bush shown here is unusually large probably due to loss of canopy caused by insect damage at Sandbanks. Lower right image shows next year flower buds inOctober.
