Bitternut Hickory

Carya cordiformis

When found among deciduous trees this Hickory will have a straight, branchless trunk with tight bark. Young bark is greenish with pronounced stripes. Leaves have 7 to 11 leaflets the longest at the ends. The nut has 4 ridges coming to a sharp point and is very bitter.
