White Elm

Ulmus americana

A tall tree with spreading top and drooping branches. Its sturdy trunk is supported by a flaring root. Seeds mature and drop before the leaves appear and germinate quickly. The Dutch Elm disease has killed most of our White Elms but there are some are survivors, probably thanks to their comparative isolation and to their fast germination and rapid growth. Young trees can be identified by their oddly asymmetrical leaves and their corky striped bark. Image on lower left is a tree in blossom, mid April.
