White Ash

Fraxinus americana

Our most common Ash. When found in hardwood forest this is often a large tree unbranched for most of its height. Mature bark has diamond patterned ridges. A trunk about 45 cm diameter will indicate an eighty to one hundred year old tree. Leaf stalks are the longest of the Ash trees. Seeds are often red tinted and the seed is encased by its wings only at the tip.Seeds stay on the tree into winter. Leaf backs are hairy on veins only and stems are smooth. Leaves are puplish in fall.
