Hop Hornbeam, Ironwood

Ostrya virginiana

Our hardest wood, it grows in the understory and at the edges of deciduous woods. Named for its seed that resembles those of the hop plant. On the upper left is a very old speciman. Lower left are pollen catkins. Seeds develop as the leaves appear.
