Blue Beech

Carpinus caroliniana

A small understory tree found in wet and shaded habitat. Seldom seen as a stand-alone tree and often dies immature. Not a true beech tree although the muscled trunk resembles the beech in texture and colour. The leafy branches and leaves often take the form of a horizontal spray. Note the toothed leaf edges with one large, sharp tooth followed by one or two smaller ones. Has both pollen catkins and seed flower on same tree. Distinctive seed cluster shows nutlets forming.
