Beech, American

Fagus grandifolia

Matures for seed production at about 50 years and then produces at intervals. Young trees often hold their leaves all winter. Spreads by root sprouts. Nuts are edible. Middle right are new leaves and seed flowers, lower left is the nut seed. Pollen flowers resemble seed flowers but have long slim stems and drop off when ripe.
