Rock Polypody

Polypodium virginianum

A small leathery evergreen fern growing from creeping rhizomes. Usually found in shallow humus over rock, but these samples were growing on mossy humus over sand. Record date was late October. Note the large spore packages. On the left,a variation of this fern has more triangular, sharply pointed blades that are wider at the base. To confuse us further they can interbreed.
