Spinulose Wood Fern

Dryopteris carthusiana

Similar to the Evergreen Wood Fern which is green after frost while this fern turns light yellow. The upper left image was made in late October after frost. On the Spinulose Wood Fern the lower inner leaflets on the lowest pair of leaves are usually longer than the second and all subsequent leaflets. See image lower right. On the Evergreen Wood Fern the first pair of lower leaflets is usually equal to or shorter than the second pair.
