Bracken

Pteridium aquilinum

The Bracken fern grows in partial shade and in sand or poor, slightly acidic soil. The main stem usually branches once into three fronds, but may branch up to three times. The fiddlehead is toxic and not edible. Spores, lower right, appear on the backs of the leaflets along the edges. Centre image on the right is a larger, mature leaflet.
