Elegant Stinkhorn

Mutinus elegans

This strange fungus lives in mowed or grazed grass land. It is spread by insects attracted by the fetid, chocolate coloured slime which is a spore mass. Lower right is a section through one of the egg-like bodies that are attached to the soil by fiberous roots. The growth from egg to maturity can be take as little as thirty minutes.
