Liverwort

Marchantia ssp. unknown

Liverworts are one of the oldest plant forms known and appear in many variations, mainly the leafy forms and the thallose more prostrate creeping forms. This thallose Liverwort develops spores in tiny bell shaped capsules under umbrellas on 2 to 3 cm high stalks. Image lower left shows new leaves forming from knobs on old growth. Note the filaments that attach leaves to soil. Look on or beside paths in damp soil or in shaded boggy places. Usually grows mixed with mosses and is sometimes classed as one.
