Red Oak

Quercus rubra

Our most common Oak. In open spaces it has a full rounded form but it will become tall in open woods. Note the red tinge in the immature bark. There are some splendid mature Oaks in and around Beaver Meadow. Bottom left is 200 year plus tree. The leaves on small saplings are notched rather than lobed. On mature trees they are variable in size and shape but always have sharply pointed lobes. Red oaks generally keep their leaves later than other kinds of trees.
