Hawthorn

Crataegus sp.

Hawthorn is rapidly being supplanted by the Buckthorn in our hedgerows. This has affected birds including the Shrike, a bird that uses the Hawthorn as a nesting site. There are numerous hybrids of this shrub making identification difficult but the blossom with its red anthers, the red fruit and wicked thorns are all good indicators.
